The Kalakaua Basketball Clinic started more than 40 years ago in the low-income housing area of Kalihi and has grown to become the premier basketball fundamental skills program for youth in the state of Hawai‘i, Matsumoto said. The visiting crew were assisted by Nouveau Naumu, Tab Matsumoto, Bobby Kamakele and Pedro Saligumba, all heavily-involved in youth basketball programs here. In addition to Agena, the head coach was accompanied by coaches Mike Taylor of Punahou School, Myles Akamine and Raynaldo Dulan and volunteer student athletes Kainoa Chu of Iolani, Natasha Helsham of Aiea, Marcus Holyfield, Shannon Nishimura, Kelli Shibata and Taylor Babbitt of Mid-Pacific. Matsumoto said the focus of the clinic outside of the physical aspects of basketball included commitment to working hard and getting along with other students using a variety of drills that challenged the athletes’ mind and body. ![]() Higa teamed with Team Central and coach Clarence Sales in bringing Agena to the island in a previous clinic that also attracted a large number of island student athletes. Guy Higa, coach and trainer at Island School, said at the end of the clinic the kids would be dribbling all over the place, Karen Matsumoto of the Kaua‘i Youth Basketball Association, co-sponsor of the three-day clinic that marked the start of spring break, said the students were recognized by Agena and his staff for their attitude and desirable characteristics that made them stand out during the three days.įor the honor, each player received a basketball from the coach.Ĭo-sponsored by the county, the clinic worked with more than 50 middle school aged students to learn and practice drills geared to improve the players’ control, quickness and strength in ball handling, passing, rebounding and dribbling. These students, many coming from the recently completed county’s 13 and Under basketball program, were recognized by coach Dennis Agena of the Kalakaua Basketball Clinic last weekend. Koa Baclayon, Kairey Bermoy, Morgan Childs, Jassem Cumlat, Kristle Henry, Peterson Lahip, Malyssa Manera, Nicole Palacio, Jodi Reis and Cy Whitlock share something in common. ![]()
